NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre
The NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre takes new discoveries, treatments and technologies into the clinic, using unique tools, facilities and world-leading expertise.
We aim to improve people's health and resilience throughout life. Our research focuses on nutrition, respiratory conditions, infectious diseases and critical care.
We are a partnership between the University of Southampton and University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research.
Our research
Nutrition, Lifestyle and Metabolism: We're driving better health throughout life by improving nutrition. We focus on three key stages; starting well in life, staying healthy for longer and improving nutrition in older age.
Respiratory and Allergy: Our research seeks to improve outcomes from allergies and respiratory diseases. We take discoveries from the lab and use them to create new diagnostic tests and preventative treatments. We aim to increase the resilience of patients, communities and the NHS.
Microbiology, Immunology and Infection: We are finding new ways to reduce infectious disease and antimicrobial resistance. By doing this, we hope to improve the health and resilience of both individuals and the NHS.
Perioperative, Surgical and Critical Care: Our research aims to improve survival, recovery and quality of life for those with a critical illness or having surgery. We are looking at ways to tailor care to each person and involve patients more in decisions about their care.
Data, Health and Society: We are using artificial intelligence (AI) and insights into health data to support decision making in healthcare.
