Meet the Radiotherapy Research team

The Radiotherapy Research team

What is radiotherapy research?

Around half of all cancer patients will receive radiotherapy as part of their treatment.

At University Hospital Southampton, we’re delivering research to find the most effective way of administering radiotherapy. Key research questions include:

  • Are we delivering the optimal dose to tumour sites while preserving a good quality of life for participants?
  • Can we give an effective dose if it’s split into fewer fractions?
  • Are protons or photons more effective, and which have fewer side effects for the patient?

Our research has one primary focus – improving patient outcomes. We hope that today’s trials will become tomorrow’s treatments.

How does your team support research in our university-hospital partnership?

Our team operates under the cancer research umbrella within Research and Development. We work closely with the wider cancer research trials teams.

We are proud to have recently adopted the TYA portfolio and have exciting plans to develop it further.

We assist patients from their first day at UHS, administering treatment and providing long-term support post-radiotherapy for years to come.

Who’s in the team?

We’re a small team, mostly consisting of therapeutic radiographers.

Lyndsey is our team’s lead. She is currently on maternity leave and will return in November.

Lucy and Jodie are permanent research therapeutic radiographers. They attend clinics and MDTs, screen and approach patients, set up future trials and handle day-to-day operations.

Laura is a pre-treatment therapeutic radiographer. She’s on a split role secondment with the team until October, leading on a number of our trials.

Ceri is our wonderful clinical trials assistant who keeps things running behind the scenes. She organises clinic visits and liaises with trials centres and patients to ensure all logistical requirements are met.

How can staff get in touch?
